Vermont Street

Vermont Street

A Street More Crooked than Lombard Street

Surprisingly Lombard Street is not the most crooked street in San Francisco and in fact there is another that is more crooked but doesn’t receive the same notoriety.  Why is that?  Perhaps there are a number of reasons, one may be location, the other…view or it’s a little harder to take good pictures as you drive down the narrowing streets. This is one question you’ll have to answer for yourself.

However as usual…I had to see for myself.  The street I’m writing about is Vermont Street which is located in the Portrero Hill District of San Francisco. If you want to find the location that will take you directly to the start of the winding decent, I would set my GPS to 859 Vermont Street.

There are roughly seven corkscrew type turns that take you down from 20th street to 22nd street on Vermont. I stopped along the way and stepped up on the outskirts of McKinley Square and as I looked down I noticed the 101 Freeway which almost runs parallel to Vermont Street.  It’s clearly different than Lombard which gives a cobblestone feel as you drive along the beautifully landscaped street however Vermont Street is worth a quick look if you are in the area. In fact, it’s not far from the Mission District and less than two miles from the Balmy Street Murals so plan your trip accordingly.
