Postcard Row on Steiner Street Across from Alamo Square |
Painted Ladies - San Francisco
Nestled discretely on a hill with San Francisco’s lustrous
city as a backdrop is the renowned Painted Ladies commonly referred to as
Postcard Row. These magnificent Victorian homes are located approximately 1.5
miles East of Golden Gate Park on Steiner Street which crosses both Fell and
Oak Streets. If you head North on Steiner Street you will find Postcard Row
directly on your left. If you have a GPS then set it to 722 Steiner Street and you
will get there.
The best place to enjoy these magnificent homes is to find an
area at the park located directly across the street at Alamo Square. This will give
you a great view of Postcard Row and the City of San Francisco. Parking is
sometimes challenging depending on when you get there but usually you can find
parking around the perimeter of Alamo Square or in one of the neighborhood
streets.
These famous homes were built between 1892 and 1896 by
developer Matthew Kavanaugh who lived in the seventh house on 722 Steiner
Street which was the first home built in 1892. This home is larger and is
considered the base of the other six or Six Sisters as they are sometimes
called. In 2010 this home was listed for sale at an asking price of
approximately $4 million dollars, however shortly thereafter the listing was
removed. The same year 210 Steiner Street sold for nearly $2.4 million
dollars.
These beautiful homes have received much notoriety over the
years by appearing as the backdrop for many movies and television shows as the
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
,The Woman in Red
and Full House
.
